Pharos Life Corporation (PLC) was founded by John Kennedy in 2003 with a mission to research, develop and commercialize technologies and therapies that utilize light to improve wellness and quality of life. Now the number one manufacturer of home-use light therapy products in the world, the company has developed several different products for skincare and wellness solutions.
PLC founder John Kennedy has made a lifelong career of his interest and passion with light – its effect on our environment and its effect on our health. Beginning in 1979 with the founding of a lighting maintenance, distribution, design and manufacturing firm John moved on to found EFOS Inc. in 1982. Under John’s leadership, EFOS was a pioneer in the field of photo-activated chemistry. The company had the first patents in the use of light emitting diodes for photo-polymerization of composite materials used in restorative and cosmetic dentistry.
It was also at EFOS that John first began his research into the use of light alone and in combination with photosensitizers for antimicrobial applications such as killing bacteria in blood products and the bacteria responsible for periodontal disease. After achieving a leadership position in its core markets, EFOS was sold in 2001.
While privately funding research into the healing powers of light technology, Kennedy observed that the FDA approved the use of blue light for treating Acne in 2004. What became evident to John was that with advances in battery and LED capabilities combined with the regulatory acceptance of blue light for treating acne, PLC had the opportunity to develop a convenient, portable and affordable alternative to the large, capital intensive machines historically required to deliver light therapy – in clinics and, perhaps more importantly, for the first time ever in the home. After three years of research and development, PLC introduced the Tända Professional Skincare System as its first commercial product in 2007. The Tända Professional Skincare System is a modular handheld light therapy system offering two skincare solutions: a 414nm blue light treatment head for the treatment and prevention of mild to moderate acne and a 660nm red light treatment head for skin rejuvenation to combat the signs of aging.
In 2008, PLC launched a second product line of devices for the prestige retail market. The Tända Prestige Light Therapy System, a smaller yet sleek and convenient device offers the existing proven skincare solutions, acne and anti-aging.
Expanding distribution throughout North America, Australia, Asia and Europe, Pharos Life Corporation has become the number one manufacturer of home-use light therapy products in the world.
Not content to rest in the skincare market alone, and as a recreational runner with a long history of using light to treat a troubled Achilles tendon, Kennedy was challenged by finding a way to bring LED technology into the mainstream of chiropractic care. The Tända Professional device platform now provided the opportunity to deliver this important modality in a convenient, portable and affordable way. The Tända Professional Restore is a handheld light therapy device that uses 870nm infrared LED light to elevate tissue temperature and provide a temporary increase in localized blood circulation. The result is diminished pain, increased muscle relaxation and improved range and freedom of motion.
PLC has invested millions of dollars in ongoing research in light and its uses. This commitment continues with various wavelengths being researched and explored for use in providing a higher level of health and wellness. These advancements in care will be provided as part of our light therapy treatment solutions and offered as additional options to the Tända Professional modular system.
